About the Sacrament of Penance

We should not be afraid to confess our sins to a Priest and ask for God's mercy. The priest represents Christ, assures us that Jesus truly forgives us and also represents the Church, the people of God, whom we have also harmed by our sins. Great peace of mind comes from this Sacrament. Remember, the priest is not a prison warden but a physician for the soul.

Preparation for the Sacrament:

During the Sacrament (those confessing) or Blessing

  • It is also good to confess lesser sins (called 'venial').

Venial sins (see below) may seem like small things, but they are often the very things that harm relationships the most and strain our relationship with God and others. For example, very few marriages end over one serious sin like adultery and so on. But many marriages end because of venial sins like persistent "little white lies", nagging, lack of affection, lack of gratitude, laziness, or selfishness. These things, as in any friendship or relationship between a parent and a sibling, can strain a relationship. Serious sins on the other hand, fracture or break our relationship with God and others and represent a turning away from God. Gossip, for example, while not murder, can -when practiced over a period of time-- achieve what serious sin seeks to achieve: a turning away from God and neighbor, preferring Self over others, choosing selfishness over love.

In this sacrament we receive not only forgiveness for our sins, but also a special medicinal grace -- God's supernatural life and energy -- to help us avoid sin in the future and grow in goodness and holiness. Without this grace, we're on our own.

  • The following are some steps, which can be taken to dispel students' fears and to highlight God's Mercy and love for them.

    STEP ONE

    DISPELLING THEIR FEARS

    1. Students choose their image of God - judge , merciful, indifferent
    2. Go through the following Scripture readings and the question is " What are these readings telling us about God's Mercy and His image?

    GOD'S MERCY

Please read the following. What are they saying about God's mercy?

    MATTHEW 8

    8:1

2 Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him and he sat down and began to teach them.

3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery; and making her stand before all of them,

4 they said to him, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery.

5 now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?"

6 they said this to test him, so that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.

7 when they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."

8 and once again he bent down and wrote on the ground.

9 When they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the elders; and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.

10 Jesus straightened up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"

11 She said, "No one, sir." And Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go your way, and from now on do not sin again."

12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life."

    LUKE 15

11 Then Jesus said, "There was a man who had two sons.

12 The younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me.' So he divided his property between them.

13 A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and traveled to a distant country, and there he squandered his property in dissolute living.

14 When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country and he began to be in need.

15 So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs.

16 He would gladly have filled himself with the pods that the pigs were eating; and no one gave him anything.

17 But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I am dying of hunger!

    18 I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you;

19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands."'

20 So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him.

21 Then the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'

22 But the father said to his slaves, 'Quickly, bring out a robe--the best one--and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.

    23 And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate;

24 for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!' And they began to celebrate.

25 "Now his elder son was in the field; and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing.

26 He called one of the slaves and asked what was going on.

27 He replied, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has got him back safe and sound.'

28 Then he became angry and refused to go in. His father came out and began to plead with him.

29 But he answered his father, 'Listen! For all these years I have been working like a slave for you, and I have never disobeyed your command; yet you have never given me even a young goat so that I might celebrate with my friends.

30 But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fatted calf for him!'

31 Then the father said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.

32 But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found.'"

    JOHN 20

19 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you."

20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

21 Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you."

22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.

23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

24 But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.

25 So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe."

26 A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you."

27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe."

28 Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"

29 Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe."

    1. speak about the fact that this is the image of God we should keep in mind when approaching the Sacrament of Penance - God is our Father, who loves us and accepts us back whenever we sin, if we want his forgiveness. Yes, God is our judge for He knows us better than anyone else, but He is also all merciful and we should trust in His mercy.
    2. This is the God we will be meeting in the Sacrament of Penance.

The Examination of Conscience which follows should not be used in isolation but should be preceded by a detailed look at God's Mercy and love and the fact that God understands
that we are weak and don't always measure up to doing and being our best
. God understands that we commit sin as we all have faults and failings. Students should also be reminded of Church teaching regarding the essential goodness of each person, made in the Image and likeness of God.

Also, this will need to be modified for Lower School students, as this is intended especially with Upper School students

HOW CAN I TELL IF I HAVE COMMITTED A SERIOUS SIN?

  • For a sin to be serious, 3 things are required.
  • NOTE WELL

Pretended ignorance and stubborness or hardness of heart do not diminish BUT RATHER increase the sin.

No one is seen to be ignorant of the principles of the moral law, which are written in the conscience of all.

Sin committed through malice , by a deliberate choice to be cruel or mean, is the worst kind of sin

  • BUT HOW CAN I KNOW THIS IN A SIMPLE WAY?

An easy way to see whether the matter is serious is to consider the following question.

Have I given control to any of the main sins (the root sins of each commandment), so that I allowed them to dictate my actions and thoughts?

    OR

Have I sinned in the following ways?

BASICALLY TO SIN IN THIS WAY IS TO SIN AGAINST LOVE

BOY, IT LOOKS LIKE I HAVE BEEN SINNING SERIOUSLY FOR AGES!!!!

If you feel this way, consider the following!

Before you panic, remember that you need THREE things before you can sin seriously. Keep these in mind when you consider the sins outlined above. The matter must be serious, you must have chosen to commit the sin with your free will and you were free to do it.

Given this understanding , the Church tells us the following:

AND THIS 'MASS' IDEA? DO I REALLY HAVE TO GO EACH WEEK?

To miss Mass with no good reason is a serious matter, especially if we consider what occurs at Mass. The Church knows how difficult this may be for some students, especially whose families may not practise their faith by going to Mass, even though they practise it in others ways.

For those of you who have the means to get to Mass, the answer is a simple yes, you do need to continue going and to miss out would be serious and this would need to be confessed. At Mass, you are with Jesus at the foot of the Cross, in the room of the Last Supper, and at his tomb where he rose again. When you receive Communion you are receiving all of Heaven. If Mass is boring, it may be because youth have not gotten involved. Youth are the future of the Church and what will make this world a better place. At Mass, you pray with others and gain as much as you give. Just remember, that whilst youth participation could make the Mass more lively, the purpose of Mass is not to entertain but to share in the story of Christ and the Christian community and to receive Jesus in the readings, in Holy Communion and in the love of the people present.

Now, there are some good reasons why some Catholics cannot get to Mass. These could depend on the person's age, family circumstances, availability of transport (especially in country areas) and so on. For those people, the following should be remembered. You are not fully responsible if you don't have the 'freedom' to get to Mass each week. If this is truly your situation, then you are not responsible for committing a serious sin and when a Mass is held at school, (and you haven't committed any other serious sin) then you should receive Communion, if you want to and you believe the teaching about the Eucharist. However, students who cannot attend Mass for a good reason must, nevertheless, attend Mass when they are able to. If you feel you would be able to attend if you tried, for example, by asking your parents, you need to try. Once you are able to and are free to be present at Mass, you are responsible for your actions. Now that you know this, it is between you and God and your informed conscience.

Teachers please note: paragraphs 2168 - 2188 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, outlines in clear detail the significance of the Mass and the Sunday Mass obligation. It may be helpful to look at it before discussing it with your students.

Now, it is important that you look deeply into your heart. Consider all that has been presented to you. Inform your conscience so that you can make the right decision for your life, now that you are fully aware.

Following is a more full examination of conscience to help you with your preparation.

  • If you feel some students are hesitant after their preparation, or still unsure, please remind them that:

  • Also remind students that;

The Priest's words are only an indication of what he may say.

    1. Make the sign of the Cross

The priest may welcome you and also share a passage of Scripture with you.
If he does not, begin this way -

  • Student : Bless me Father for I have sinned.

Priest : May grace , mercy and peace be with you from God your Father and Jesus Christ your Saviour

    Student : Amen

    1. Tell the Priest how long it has been since your last confession
    1. Father I am not a Catholic but I would like to ask for your blessing OR
    2. Father , it has been _____________ ( years or months or weeks ) since my last confession. (If you do not wish to confess, please tell Father).

  • Father then pronounces God's forgiveness and gives you ABSOLUTION

" God, Father of mercies , through the death and Resurrection of His Son , has reconciled the world to Himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins; through the ministry of the Church may God give you pardon and peace , and I absolve you from your sins in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit .
