Composition-Deadly Flight

The day of October-third had commenced, it was exceedingly cold and gray, this was the day for the first open cockpit trans-Antarctic flight. This would be a deathtifying attempt made by Sam Huddson, a sixty-six year old aviation pioneer. who was filled with determination. His route would take him Southward from Perth airport to Antarctica and then back to Perth airport at around 2230 the next day. His aircraft was equipped with extra fuel and food for the treaturous journey.

It was time for take-off, the dreadful weather had taken it’s toll on the aircraft which was now completely drenched with water. As the man taxied of to the runway he started to feel the cold- but never once did he reconsider post-poning his deadly attempt. Once Sam Huddson reached a cruising altitude of ten-thousand feet the cold was so intense that the water droplets on his goggles were starting to coagulate and freeze. The first ten hours went past relatively well but then the proceeding hour was hell on earth for the lone pilot. The nightmare began when Sam was just twenty kilometres from the Antarctic coast. The strong Southerly trade winds had set upon him which made it difficult to fly the aircraft.

Night was setting in upon Sam’s flight with the only lighting he had came from a half-frozen light bulb which he had to illuminate his frosted cock-pit controls. Yet the man uttered no complaint and just subdued himself to natures will. As the night progressed into darkness the man monitored his instrument panel, for he dreaded an engine failure in the sixty below zero temperatures. As Sam progressed deeper into the darkness which was actually Antarctica, the temperature plunged, every inch he progressed into the darkness. He sneaked a peek on the outside temperature gage in front of him. The reading was one-hundred and twenty degrees below zero. But still the man did not hesitate to return and continued. Little did he know, he was actually flying into a blizzard. He could not feel his feet or arms but still he continued even though that it was so cold that each time he attempted to spit out his saliva it froze before he could actually spit it out.

Suddenly the engine stalled from the intense cold. Sam knew this was the end, he knew the dreary blizzard had conquered him. He desperately tyred to re-start the engine as the aircraft went into a nose dive. The aircraft plummeted nose-first into the snow. Miraculesly, Sam Huddson survived the plane crash. He fled the aircraft from fear the fuel on board would explode. As he fled the aircraft he saw his whole life before him. He was helpless and all alone. But he never regretted what he tyred to achieve. The last spoken words he said were "I will never regret what I have tyred to achieve, but at least I will know I died doing what I love. Flying" Imidiently after he had muttered those words which had caused the saliva in his mouth to freeze, he lay down in the snow, dreading his death. Suddenly from the distance a search helicopter flew towards Sam Huddson. But it was to late, Sam had died.
